Are you a social and innovative thinker? Do you want to help combating online hate speech? In that case, you are an ideal candidate to take part in the SELMA "Hacking Hate" hackathon in Berlin on 5 and 6 December 2018!

The SELMA "Hacking Hate" hackathon calls upon young people (15 to 18 years old) from across Europe to team up with each other, involving at least one adult (a teacher, youth worker, parent or other carer). Applicants need to put forward an innovative idea to prevent or remediate online hate speech. This can range from concrete technological solutions (a platform, a mobile app or a new type of design standards), to better counselling and reporting mechanisms, education programmes, awareness campaigns, or any other ground-breaking strategy applicants can think of.

Send us your team's idea before 20 September 2018 and get the chance to be invited to the "Hacking Hate" hackathon, taking place at the Facebook Digital Learning Centre in Berlin on 5 and 6 December 2018!

From start to finish, the "Hacking Hate" hackathon is a great opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people, and bring forward fresh ideas for combating online hate speech. In Berlin, you will have time to exchange views with young people from other European countries and further develop your plans to hack online hate. Inspiring coaches will offer you and your team support along the way. You will pitch your final concept in front of an international jury and have the chance of winning the SELMA "Hacking Hate" award.

How to participate?

Let your creativity flow and submit an idea that could help tackling hate speech online! Here are the key requirements for participation:

To summarise your idea, you will have to answer a number of questions as indicated in the following template. Once you have prepared your idea, please submit it using our online submission survey. Ideas will be evaluated in the first half of October 2018 based on their creativity, innovativeness, feasiblity, and level of maturity. Six teams will be invited to participate in the hackathon shortly thereafter.

The SELMA "Hacking Hate" organisation team will cover participation, travel costs, and accommodation for the selected participants.
